to be published by the British Horse Society, in 2008.

Jenny Rolfe wrote this book to share both the experiences she gained in Portugal, a country with a long tradition of classical training, and her innovative techniques which are aimed at attaining the ultimate lightness and empathy in riding. Jenny describes how she has begun to understand the influence of breathing and body language and this journey of discovery will help every rider who aspires to become a true horseman.

Ride from the Heart begins by looking at the nature of the horse of the human giving guidance gaining a greater sense of self-awareness. Once this is achieved, working the horse at liberty and understanding how to become his herd leader from the ground will be the foundation for a stronger relationship, a bond that will be enhanced by the ridden work.

Subsequent chapters include the value of correct lungeing and work in hand, an in-depth study of the meaning of balance in riding and the athletic development of the horse. Exercises with clear instructions are suggested throughout and the influence of breathing within riding is highlighted. When these techniques are mastered, they will cultivate the sense of 'feel', which in turn will encourage 'oneness' between horse and rider, leading to a partnership that encapsulates the spirit of dance.

I can see how the horse becomes our mirror, reflecting our moods, state of calmness, integrity and sensitivity. The nature of the horse will always be to look to his herd leader for security and direction. This is our place in his world and the purpose of this book is to help you to establish and maintain this leadership, by learning to communicate with the horse's mind. We should not seek to humanize the horse, but make it our responsibility to learn more about his ways.

Ride from the Heart is essential reading not only for classical and competitive riders, but also all students and trainers who wish to work in harmony with their horses, to seek a better understanding and to learn a progressive system of teaching for both horse and rider. Whatever your level of training, this book will help to enhance and enrich your relationship with your horse so that riding becomes an art form based on mutual love and respect.

Our greatest thanks to Rafael Lemos for his wonderful photographs, shown here, taken from 'Ride From the Heart'.

There are many excellent books which help the rider to address the technical goals of dressage but 'Ride from the Heart' has the potential to transform the way in which you communicate with your horse. Its pages will both inform and challenge with its message that the relationship with the horse is paramount.
